Hitting a wall at work is extremely common and perfectly normal, especially once you’ve been there a while. Are you annoyed with your coworkers? Maybe you’re tired of your boss. Or are you simply bored with your daily duties? Whatever the reason for your dissatisfaction, here are 5 ways to learn to love your job again.
How Can You Learn To Love Your Job Again?
Get Specific
Take some time to figure out what’s really bugging you. Were you passed over for a promotion? Is the open floor plan making it hard to think? Do you feel like you aren’t being heard in meetings? Once you determine which specific factors are causing your distress, you can start working on solutions.
Ask for Support
With your list of specific annoyances in hand, reach out to your boss and/or a trusted coworker. If you already have concrete solutions in mind, ask for help implementing them. If you aren’t sure how to fix the problems, ask for advice. Sometimes just talking things over with someone can help clarify your thoughts and develop a plan of action.
Start a Gratitude Journal
Even in the most difficult situations, there are still things to be thankful for. Maybe your holiday bonus paid for a new refrigerator at home, or the unlimited PTO allows you to spend more time with your family. Every day, write down at least one positive thing that your job provides.
Build Connections
Surrounding yourself with people who both care about you and understand your situation can be invaluable. Work on developing closer connections with your coworkers. Also, pay attention to your network outside of your company. If you end up deciding to leave, they may be able to help you find your next role.
Consider Moving On
Dissatisfaction and apathy at work are common and generally short-lived. But sometimes, they’re early warning signs that it’s time to move on. If you’ve made a good-faith effort to love your job again, but it just isn’t happening, start looking for new opportunities. Jobs aren’t marriages, and most people move around every few years. Sometimes the right answer is to fall in love with something new.
